Tattoo Prep 101: Essential Steps for Best Results and Healing

Getting tattooed is a physical process, and your body needs fuel to handle the stress and discomfort. Don't let low blood sugar ruin your session! I know that everyone out there is trying to stay fit, stay healthy and don't usually think it's good for you to sit and eat candy all day. Good news for you, tattoo day is the one day where it is absolutely OK!

1. Eat a Big Meal Beforehand (The Glycogen Store)
The biggest mistake is showing up hungry. The physical stress and pain trigger your body's "fight or flight" response, causing a surge in adrenaline. This surge rapidly consumes the glucose circulating in your blood.

• 1-2 hours before: Eat a substantial meal with both protein and complex carbohydrates. Carbs are stored as glycogen in your muscles and liver, providing the sustained energy (ATP) necessary to regulate your blood sugar and prevent the dizziness and nausea that often accompanies hypoglycemia during intense sessions.

2. Bring Sugary Snacks (The Glucose Boost)
Even a great meal will eventually wear off. For longer sessions, you need quick energy.

• Keep handy: Bring items like fruit snacks, juice boxes and your favorite candy.

• The quick fix: If you start feeling shaky or lightheaded, these snacks deliver simple glucose—the body's preferred immediate fuel source—directly into your bloodstream, providing the rapid metabolic boost needed to stabilize your energy and finish your session strong.

A Note for Clients with Diabetes: If you are diabetic, please consult your doctor about managing your blood sugar levels before and during your tattoo appointment, as stress and changes in routine can impact your insulin needs.
