Gym Etiquette for Fresh Ink: Workout Guidelines

Written by our resident artist Brian Ulibarri

A fresh tattoo is an open wound. Gyms are packed with bacteria, and sweat, friction, or aggressive movement can cause infection, irritation, or ruined ink.

Timeline & Best Practices

  • The First 48 Hours: Skip the gym entirely to let the skin settle.

  • Wear Loose Clothing: Avoid tight compression gear that traps moisture. Stick to loose, breathable layers.

  • Block Gym Germs: Keep the tattoo covered and never let bare, healing skin touch shared benches, mats, or machines.

  • Keep it Light: Short, low-intensity workouts (like walking) are fine. Avoid heavy sweating or movements that stretch the tattooed skin.

Post-Workout Cleansing (Non-Negotiable)

  1. Wash: Clean your hands first, then use a gentle tattoo cleanser to wash away sweat and gym bacteria.

  2. Dry: Rinse thoroughly and gently pat dry with a clean paper towel. Never rub.

  3. Hydrate: Apply a very thin layer of tattoo balm. Do not over-apply, or you'll suffocate the skin.

Most lifting routines can safely resume after about two weeks—just start light and build back up. For the ultimate healing solution, I strictly use and recommend Hustle Butter Deluxe. For more on gym percautions and to see my tattoo portfolio go to my site at: brianulibarri.com
